What Is Walk-and-Talk Therapy? (And Why We Do It on the Beach)
If you’ve ever felt like your best conversations happen during a walk—not sitting across a table—you aren’t alone.
At Beach Cities Psychotherapy, some clients choose Walk-and-Talk Therapy instead of meeting in a traditional therapy office. While office sessions remain the right fit for many people, others discover that moving their bodies, breathing fresh ocean air, and walking alongside their therapist creates a different kind of therapeutic experience.
Because our office is located directly across the street from the beach in Hermosa Beach, our Walk-and-Talk sessions begin and end in our office before we head out for a therapeutic walk along the Strand.
For many clients, it’s one of the most grounding, calming, and meaningful ways to experience therapy.
What Is Walk-and-Talk Therapy?
Walk-and-Talk Therapy is exactly what it sounds like.
Instead of spending the session seated in an office, therapist and client walk together while engaging in the same thoughtful, confidential therapy that would happen indoors.
The therapeutic goals don’t change.
The conversation doesn’t become casual.
The depth of the work doesn’t disappear.
What changes is the environment.
Many people notice they feel less self-conscious, less “stuck,” and more able to access thoughts and emotions while walking side-by-side rather than sitting face-to-face.
Why Does Walking Help?
We often think more clearly when we’re moving.
Research has shown that walking can:
- Reduce stress hormones
- Improve mood
- Increase creativity and problem-solving
- Calm the nervous system
- Improve emotional regulation
When our bodies begin to relax, our minds often become more flexible. Conversations can flow differently, making it easier to explore difficult emotions, process experiences, and gain new perspectives.
Sometimes the breakthrough doesn’t come from trying harder.
Sometimes it comes from taking a walk.
The Beach Offers Something Special
There’s a reason people instinctively head to the ocean when life feels overwhelming.
The rhythmic sound of waves, the open horizon, the fresh air, and the natural beauty of the coastline all help encourage the nervous system to shift out of survival mode.
For many clients, the beach provides a sense of spaciousness—both physically and emotionally.
As we walk, distractions fade and difficult conversations often feel a little more manageable.
Beginning and ending each session in our Hermosa Beach office also provides structure, privacy, and an opportunity to transition intentionally into and out of the therapeutic work.
An EMDR-Informed Perspective
As an EMDR Certified Therapist, I’ve always been fascinated by the connection between movement and the brain’s ability to heal.
One of the core components of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is bilateral stimulation (BLS)—alternating left-right stimulation that helps the brain process difficult experiences and integrate information in new ways.
While Walk-and-Talk Therapy is not EMDR, and we do not conduct formal EMDR processing while walking, many clients naturally experience gentle bilateral stimulation simply through the rhythmic act of walking.
Every step alternates between the left and right sides of the body.
Although this isn’t a substitute for EMDR, many people report that walking helps thoughts organize themselves differently. They often find it easier to process emotions, make connections, and leave feeling clearer than when they arrived.
Movement has a way of helping us move—not just physically, but emotionally as well.
Moving Forward Is More Than a Metaphor
One of my favorite aspects of Walk-and-Talk Therapy is something that’s difficult to measure but impossible to ignore.
When we’re working through grief, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, or major life transitions, clients are quite literally moving forward while processing what has been keeping them stuck.
That experience can become surprisingly powerful.
Instead of feeling trapped in one place, clients are taking one step after another while exploring the next chapter of their lives.
It’s more than symbolism.
Our minds and bodies are deeply connected, and sometimes physical movement creates emotional movement as well.
Is Walk-and-Talk Therapy Right for You?
Walk-and-Talk Therapy may be a good fit if you:
- Feel restless sitting in an office.
- Think more clearly while walking.
- Love being outdoors.
- Feel calmer near the ocean.
- Are working through anxiety, stress, life transitions, grief, or relationship concerns.
- Want a different therapeutic experience than traditional office sessions.
There are also times when an office setting is more appropriate, particularly for certain types of trauma work, crisis situations, or interventions that require greater privacy or structure. Walk-and-Talk sessions are always an option just as staying in the office is also always an option.
Therapy Doesn’t Have to Look the Way You Imagine
Healing doesn’t happen because you’re sitting on a couch.
Healing happens when you feel safe enough to be honest, curious enough to explore yourself, and supported enough to grow.
For some people, that happens best in a quiet office.
For others, it happens while walking beside the ocean with the sound of the waves in the background.
Both are therapy.
Both can be deeply transformative.
