Alcohol & Substance Use Resources

If you’re wondering whether alcohol use has become a problem—either for you or for someone you love—you’re not alone. Many people reach a point where they begin to question their relationship with alcohol or feel overwhelmed by a loved one’s drinking or substance use.

At Beach Cities Psychotherapy, we help people take an honest, compassionate look at what’s happening and decide what kind of support might be most helpful. For some people, weekly therapy provides enough space and accountability to reassess their relationship with alcohol and make meaningful changes.

For others, substance use may be more entrenched and require a higher level of care such as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), support groups, or inpatient treatment.

The resources below can help you explore the next step.

Resources for People Struggling with Alcohol Use

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

(Often in-network with insurance)

IOPs provide structured treatment several days per week while allowing participants to continue living at home and maintaining many of their daily responsibilities.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Alcoholics Anonymous offers free peer-support meetings available both in-person and online.

For many people in early recovery, attending meetings regularly—sometimes daily—can provide structure, connection, and accountability.

It’s very common for newcomers to feel uncomfortable or unsure during their first few meetings. Most people report it takes 3–5 meetings before they start to feel more at ease. Feeling uncertain at first is a normal part of the process.

Resources for People Who Love Someone Struggling with Substance Use

When someone you love is struggling with alcohol or drugs, the experience can be painful, confusing, and isolating. Partners, parents, and family members often find themselves constantly worrying, trying to help, or wondering what they should or shouldn’t be doing.

At Beach Cities Psychotherapy, we regularly work with individuals and families navigating the impact of a loved one’s substance use and the relational dynamics that come with it.

Therapy can help you set healthy boundaries, process the emotional toll, and regain a sense of stability in your own life.

In addition to therapy, many people benefit from connecting with others who truly understand what this experience is like.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon offers free peer-support meetings for people who have a loved one struggling with alcohol use.

These meetings are made up of people who understand firsthand how difficult it can be to love someone who is battling addiction—whether that person is a partner, parent, child, sibling, or friend.

Many people find relief simply by being in a room with others who get it. Meetings provide a space to share experiences, learn from others, and develop healthier ways of coping with the challenges that addiction brings into a family.

Meetings are available both in-person and online.
